Local SEO Checklist for Small Business in India (2026)
A local SEO checklist for a small business in India comes down to this: a complete and verified Google Business Profile with the right category, a regular flow of genuine reviews with replies, the same name, address and phone number everywhere (website, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Facebook, Bing and Apple Maps), a website with one page per main service and per area you serve, and simple tracking of calls and enquiries. Do them roughly in that order. Most small businesses never finish the first two, which is why the rest of the list works so well for those who do.
The checklist below is written for businesses that serve customers in a specific city or area: clinics, salons, coaching centres, repair services, restaurants, shops, CA and legal practices, real estate offices.
Part 1: Google Business Profile
This is the biggest single piece of local SEO in India. When someone searches with "near me" or a locality name, the map results with three listings usually appear above the regular results.
- [ ] Claim and verify the profile at business.google.com, using a Google account owned by the business, not an employee's personal Gmail.
- [ ] Remove duplicates. Search your business on Maps. Old addresses, previous names or patient-made listings create duplicates that split your reviews.
- [ ] Use your real name only. No keywords, city names or phone numbers in the business name. It is against Google's guidelines and a common cause of suspensions.
- [ ] Pick the most specific primary category. "Tax consultant" rather than "Consultant", "Dentist" rather than "Medical clinic". Add a few relevant secondary categories.
- [ ] Set the map pin on your actual entrance, and write the address the way locals would find it, with building, floor and landmark.
- [ ] Hours, including special hours for Diwali, Holi, Eid, Pongal, Onam or whatever applies to your area.
- [ ] Services or products listed individually, with short plain descriptions and prices where you are comfortable sharing them.
- [ ] Description (up to 750 characters) that says what you do, where, and for whom. Mention languages spoken if that matters to customers.
- [ ] Photos: exterior and signboard, interior, team, and your actual work. Add new ones every month or two.
- [ ] Booking, order or appointment link if your category supports one.
- [ ] Business hours and phone answered. A profile that sends callers to an unanswered number does more harm than good.
If you run a clinic, the practitioner rules add some extra steps. We covered them in Google Business Profile optimization for clinics.
Service-area businesses
If you visit customers (plumbers, pest control, home tutors, cleaning services) and do not serve people at your address, you can hide your address and set service areas instead. Choose realistic areas you actually cover. Listing a whole state does not help you rank in all of it.
Part 2: Reviews
Reviews influence both where you rank and whether someone picks you over the next listing.
- [ ] Get your review link from the profile editor and make a QR code for the counter.
- [ ] Ask every customer after a normal job, in person and in the follow-up WhatsApp message. Not only the ones you think are happy.
- [ ] No incentives. Google's policy does not allow discounts, freebies or payment in exchange for reviews, and does not allow asking only satisfied customers.
- [ ] Reply to every review within a few days. Short and specific for positive ones, calm and offline-inviting for negative ones.
- [ ] Steady beats bursty. A few reviews every week looks natural. Fifty in one week after a year of nothing looks odd.
Reviews in Hindi or a regional language are perfectly fine. If a customer is more comfortable writing in their language, let them.
Part 3: Consistent listings (NAP)
NAP means name, address, phone. Google cross-checks your details across the web. Mismatches, like an old phone number on Justdial or a different spelling of your name on Facebook, make your business look less certain.
- [ ] Decide one exact format of name, address and phone, and use it everywhere.
- [ ] Update the main Indian directories: Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART (if you are B2B or sell products), and category-specific ones such as Practo for clinics or Zomato for restaurants.
- [ ] Bing Places (it can import from Google Business Profile) and Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Connect) for Apple Maps.
- [ ] Facebook page and Instagram profile with the same address and phone.
- [ ] Industry associations or chamber listings if you are a member.
- [ ] Keep a simple sheet listing every site where you have a listing, with login details stored safely. When you move or change numbers, you will need it.
Paid directory plans are a separate question. Some businesses get useful leads from Justdial or IndiaMART premium plans, others get mostly spam calls. Track leads from each source for a couple of months before renewing anything.
Part 4: Your website
The website supports the profile and lets you rank for searches the profile alone cannot catch.
Basics
- [ ] Name, address and phone in the footer of every page, matching your Google profile exactly.
- [ ] Click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons that work on mobile.
- [ ] Google Map embed on the contact page.
- [ ] Fast on mobile. Most local searches happen on phones, often on mobile data.
- [ ] Search Console set up and a sitemap submitted, so you can see which local searches you appear for.
Pages that rank for local searches
- [ ] One page per main service. A dental clinic should have separate pages for root canal, implants, braces and cleaning, not one "Services" page with a bullet list.
- [ ] Area pages, only where you genuinely serve. If you have branches in two localities, give each its own page with its own address, timings, photos and directions. Do not create thirty near-identical "AC repair in [area]" pages with only the area name swapped. That kind of thin content tends to be ignored or treated as spam by Google.
- [ ] Titles that include service and place, for example "Root Canal Treatment in Kothrud, Pune | Smile Care Dental".
- [ ] Local details in the content: landmarks, parking, which areas you cover, languages spoken, pricing ranges if you can share them.
- [ ] LocalBusiness schema (structured data) with your name, address, phone, hours and geo-coordinates. Plugins like Rank Math or Yoast can add it on WordPress.
Hindi and regional searches
Many customers search in Hinglish ("best tuition near me for class 10") or in regional languages. You do not always need a full second-language site. Often it is enough to use the words people actually say in your headings and FAQs, and to mention the languages you serve in. If a large part of your customers search in Hindi, Marathi or Tamil, a properly written page in that language is worth considering. Machine-translated pages rarely help.
If your website needs rebuilding to support any of this, our article on website development cost in India gives rough budgets.
Part 5: Local links and mentions
Links from local sites tell Google you are part of the area. This is slow work, so do it steadily.
- [ ] Local news sites or blogs that cover your event, camp or opening
- [ ] Your suppliers' or partners' "where to buy" or partner pages
- [ ] Local associations, RWAs, schools or colleges you sponsor or work with
- [ ] Guest talks or workshops, with a mention on the host's site
Skip paid link packages that promise hundreds of links. They are usually low-quality and can do more harm than good.
Part 6: Track what matters
Rankings are fun to check but leads pay the bills.
| What to track | Where |
|---|---|
| Calls, direction requests, website clicks from the profile | Google Business Profile, Performance section |
| Searches that show your website | Search Console, Performance report |
| Form fills and WhatsApp clicks | Google Analytics 4 events |
| Leads by source | A simple sheet: ask every new customer "how did you find us?" |
Review these once a month. If calls from the profile go up after you fix categories and add photos, you know it is working.
A realistic order of work
- Week 1: Claim, verify and fully complete Google Business Profile. Fix the name and category. Put up a review QR code.
- Weeks 2-3: Clean up NAP on Justdial, Sulekha, Facebook, Bing and Apple Maps.
- Month 1-2: Fix the website basics, then build proper service pages and branch pages.
- Ongoing: Reviews every week, replies, photos and a post or two every month, and a monthly look at the numbers.
The short version
Local SEO in India is mostly unglamorous upkeep: a complete Google profile, genuine reviews with replies, the same details everywhere, and a website with real service and branch pages. None of it is secret. The businesses that rank are usually the ones that keep doing it month after month.

Questions people ask
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work of getting your business to show up when people nearby search for what you offer, like "AC repair in Whitefield" or "chartered accountant near me". It covers your Google Business Profile, reviews, your website's location and service pages, and consistent listings on other directories. The goal is calls, messages and visits. Traffic on its own pays nothing.
How long does local SEO take to show results in India?
Fixing a neglected Google Business Profile can bring more calls within a few weeks. Ranking in the map results against established competitors usually takes a few months of steady reviews and website work. Areas with many competitors, like dentists in big metros, take longer than a niche service in a smaller town.
Do I need a website for local SEO, or is Google Business Profile enough?
A Google Business Profile alone can bring calls, especially for very local services. A website makes the profile stronger, answers questions the profile cannot, and lets you rank for more searches, like specific services and neighbouring areas. For most businesses, the two together work much better than either alone.
Should I list my business on Justdial and Sulekha?
Basic free listings on the major Indian directories are worth doing, as long as your name, address and phone number match your Google profile exactly. They bring some direct enquiries and support consistency. Whether to pay for premium plans is a separate decision; track the leads before renewing.
